Only in the Mountains #10

The kids and I were out the other day, and we passed our local movie store. The sign in the window caught my eye, and I just had to snap a photo. Free Kids? At the movie store? Would you want a kid that’s been hanging out at the movie store for that long? 😉 How many parents would be utilizing this now that it’s winter break?

When you get up closer to the sign, it says nothing about it being for kids movies, it just says details inside.

I went in and asked the manager for permission to take a photo of my kids in front of the sign, but he told me I couldn’t. (Party pooper!)

Still, does this seem a little off to you?

Free Kids

Only in the mountains, I suppose.

Wordless Wednesday: Quite a Change!

As I was going through this year’s Christmas photos and organizing them in my external hard-drive, I came across the photos from last year.

I absolutely cannot believe the difference in Ashley! She went from a little girl to a young lady.

Here, take a look for yourself:

I just can’t get over it. Where did my little girl go?!

Ok, ok. Totally stink at the “Wordless” part of Wordless Wednesday!

Now it’s your turn. If you’re participating in Wordless Wednesday, leave your link here!

Airwear Lenses: Lighter, Safer, Greener (Review)

Airwear Lenses are lighter, and more impact- and scratch- resistant than standard plastic lenses. In addition to increased durability, the lenses are made using environmentally conscious practices such as 100 percent recycled water, 100 percent recyclable packaging, and the company re-purposes unused materials in other industries. With these new, green practices Airwear conserves millions of gallons of water and eliminates 570,000 pounds of plastic waste every year!

About Airwear Lenses (as taken from the Airwear website):

Now you can support the environment and establish an every day green routine with your eyewear.

A pioneer in optical lenses, Essilor now employs green manufacturing processes in our Airwear® lenses. Airwear® lenses are the first Essilor lens material to go green, significantly reducing its environmental footprint by implementing responsible manufacturing, including:

  • Packaging: Essilor uses 100 percent recyclable cardboard made from 100 percent recyclable wooden fibers for Airwear® lenses, helping to eliminate 570,000 pounds of plastic waste every year.

  • Water Consumption: Essilor uses 100 percent recycled water for Airwear® lenses, cutting consumption in half and conserving millions of gallons of water.

  • Recycling Excess Material: Airwear® re-purposes unused materials for other industries, such as automobiles and writing instruments.

  • Donating Eyewear: Essilor supports Lions Club International’s Recycle for Sight program, which accepts old, usable glasses and donates them to those in need.

But going green doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort, performance, protection and style. Airwear® lenses are 43 percent lighter and 10 times more impact-resistant than standard plastic lenses. They also provide 100 percent UV protection.

Airwear® lenses are available for single vision and progressive prescriptions, and are compatible with the world’s most trusted vision brands, such as Varilux®, Crizal®, Xperio®, DEFINITY® and Transitions®.

My Review of Airwear Lenses

Thanks to Mom Central, I had the opportunity to try out a pair of Airwear Eyeglass Lenses. I quickly made an appointment with my eye doctor, picked out a smashing new frame, and sent my prescription and the frames off to Airwear.

It took about 3 weeks to get the glasses back, but I have to say that they were definitely worth the wait! I can’t believe how light the lenses are. My right eye is horrible, and every set of lenses I’ve had before was always really thick. Not these! They’re just as thin as my left eye’s lens, and they don’t stick out from the back of the frames. I love it! And don’t they look great? I’ve always been self-conscious about how I look in glasses – (maybe it’s those awful pink glasses I was forced to wear for so many years!) – but I love the look of these frames, and I love how light the lenses are. I’m going to be wearing glasses a lot more often now.
Another great feature of the Airwear Lenses is how scratch resistant they are. As a mom of 5 very rowdy kids, I need a pair of lenses that can really take it. So far, these are holding up great.

I also love that they provide 100% of UV protection. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 12 to 15 million people become blind from cataracts annually, and up to 20% of those may be caused or enhanced by sun exposure. Standard plastic lenses don’t give you any kind of protection, but Airwear lenses provide 100% protection from harmul UVA and UVB rays. This is really good news for me, because I found out at my last eye doctor visit that I’ve been harming my eyes by not wearing sunglasses and by wearing my disposable contacts longer than I should. If I want to fix the problems that I’ve created, I’ve got to make some serious changes. Thanks to Airwear, I’ve taken a big step in the right direction. And, since I love my glasses so much, you can be that people will be seeing me in them a lot more often.

Overall, I am quite satisfied with the Airwear lenses I received. Thank you to Mom Central and Airwear for allowing me the opportunity to try out these lenses.

Only in the Mountains #9

Forgive the horrible quality. I was driving and took the photo with my cell phone. I must say, as a yankee, this was a new sight for me. Never before have I seen an “Open House” sign on a mobile home. I found it absolutely hysterical! And if you’re wondering, the mobile home was parked in Walmart’s parking lot. Do some shopping, attend an open house. Walmart really does have it all!

I want each of you to know that you are special to me, and I want you to know how much I appreciate you.

May God bless you now and always. May He keep His hand upon you. Enjoy today with your loved ones!

Wordless Wednesday – Merry Christmas

I know, I know. I’m a day late with this Wordless Wednesday post. Since we had church on Tuesday night instead of Wednesday night, it threw everything off. I did want to share our Christmas card with you, though.

(Click on the photo to view a larger version)

I pray that each of you has a wonderful Christmas. You are all so special to me, and I wish you the very best life has to offer!

Urgent Prayers Needed (Updated)

When it seems as though all hope is lost, there is no more powerful tool to utilize than prayer. I have seen firsthand the result of a multitude of prayers. Our church that we attend now is the most praying church I have ever been a part of. I’ve never seen a congregation weep and pray over other members like this church does, and I’ve never seen more miracles than in our short time with this church.

Now I’m coming to my church family and my internet friends and family. One of my very dear friends came to me last night with a heavy heart. Her 4 year old nephew, Matthew Schulz, was diagnosed with kidney cancer on Monday. Yesterday, they staged it at a 3 with lymphnode involvement. The tumor has ruptured and it is a miracle he didn’t bleed to death.

This morning, (12/23), at 9 am (pacific time), they are doing surgery to remove the tumor, the kidney, the lymphnodes, and anything else.

He will have to undergo extensive radiation and chemo afterward. My friend, Lisa, is calling in all of her prayer warrior buddies on this one, and I know that many of my blog readers also believe in the power of prayer and will lift up a few words for this dear little boy.

I am praying for divine healing, for peace for the family, for the doctors to be alert and do their best work. Praying for a miracle.

Thank you so much for your prayers for this sweet little boy. Our God is an Awesome God. He can do great and mighty things. We just need to ask.

Update – 12/23 @ 10:15pm

Earlier this evening, I received the following message from my friend Lisa:

We have had an answer to prayer!!!  My nephew had the surgery and when they got in there, they realized that the tumor had NOT ruptured and the cancer had not spread throughout his abdomen.
They removed the tumor and the kidney.  They think he may be Stage 2 rather than Stage 3 which is wonderful news.
He is in the PICU, still on a vent, but hanging in there. He’s a little trooper!
Thank you SO much for your prayers.  I know that God’s hand was on him during the surgery and believe He will continue to watch over Matthew’s recovery.  We are praying for that now as he has a long road to recovery.
Praise the Lord! God is so good, and I know He is holding this little boy tightly in His arms. Please continue to pray for this family. Thank you to those of you who have tweeted, commented, or stopped by and said a word of prayer for this little guy. I know it means the world to the family.

Field Trip: Babyland General Hospital

I am a child of the 80s. My Little Ponies, Cabbage Patch Kids, Strawberry Shortcake, Holly Hobby… the list goes on and on of the things that were popular back in the day.

I grew up in Ohio and Chicago, but because my Dad’s parents lived in North Georgia, we spent lots of time visiting this area. When I was 5 or 6, I remember my parents taking me to Babyland General Hospital – the place where Cabbage Patch Kids are born. The first time I walked into Babyland General, I remember being awestruck by all the “babies.” You’d walk through room after room, and there were preemies, babies, and “kids” everywhere. There was even a tree where new babies were pulled from the Cabbage Patch, and members of the audience would get to name them. Or, you could schedule a birth and name the baby to be born ahead of time and then adopt them after the birth.

I wanted a doll so badly, but the “real” dolls cost about $150 – $200 back then. I remember my Daddy telling me I had to save my pennies and buy my own doll. I saved my pennies for a year, (with some help from Mom and Dad), and I was finally able to purchase a doll of my very own. Her name was Vera, and she was beautiful. Red yarn hair pulled into braids and the softest skin you’ve ever felt on a Cabbage Patch Kid. I went through the “adoption” process and Vera was all mine. I loved that doll, and now I’ve passed her down to my girls.

Now that we live down here in North Georgia, we get to go to Babyland General Hospital a lot more often. In fact, almost every time we drive down to Gainesville, Cleveland, or anywhere south of us, we stop at Babyland.

Recently, they moved Babyland to a new location in Cleveland, GA, and on our last trip to the dentist, we stopped to see what had changed. To start, I was flabbergasted by the size of the new building. The new “hospital” is humongous! Definitely not the crowded little house that it was in before. Our trip was bittersweet for me. I have so many memories of visiting the old Babyland General Hospital, and then taking my kids there so many years later. I can’t believe how much has changed.

We went inside the hospital and signed in. After stopping for a picture, we headed over to the window where the “original” babies were housed. Ashley couldn’t believe that I’m as old as the very first Cabbage Patch Doll. “Gosh, Mom. You really are old.” Thanks, honey.

We walked through the nurseries. Parker went crazy over all the “babies” in the cribs. Lucy wanted to take them all home with them. Zander had fun reading all of the names, and giving his opinion on what they should have been named. Jace kept trying to decide if he could really climb to the top of the shelves or if he’d fall off halfway up. (I didn’t let him try.)

After leaving the nurseries, we landed in a humongous room with tons and tons of ‘Kids. They were everywhere! The folks at Babyland had brought all of the props from the old hospital and placed them in this one huge room. And there, in the center of it all, was the tree. The exact same tree I had seen many ‘Kids born from, just cleaned up and spruced up a bit.

Parker ran from ‘Kid to ‘Kid, hugging them, patting their heads, and chatting with them. Lucy picked out her favorites and begged me to let her bring them all home. The boys found the toy section and didn’t want to leave it. There were tons of toys for little boys to play with while the girls (and I) obsessed over the babies.

All of a sudden, it was time. Mother Cabbage was about to give birth to another Cabbage Patch Baby! We ran over to the tree, and got right in front. No way we were missing this! A few minutes later, a sweet baby boy was born. The doctor asked my boys what their names were, and the baby boy was named “Zander Chase.” (Yes, I know. No one ever gets that his name is JACE on the first try. Ever.) But how cool was that? We headed over to the window and watched as little Zander Chase got weighed, measured, and wrapped in a blanket. If I had had the $$ to adopt that little guy, I totally would have. But, alas, it didn’t happen. So we took lots of pictures instead.

I had a wonderful day full of laughter and fun with my kids that day at Babyland, and I can’t wait to go back again. While I’ll forever miss the old hospital, I can’t wait to make tons of new memories with my kids at the new one.

If you’re ever in the North GA Mountain area, be sure to stop by Babyland General Hospital. Admission is always free, and it is definitely an experience you will never forget.

Below, I’ve posted more of our photos from our recent trip to Babyland General Hospital. I can’t wait to go back with the kids again soon!

SOAR! Scholarship and Me Ra Koh Photography

As a photographer, I know first hand the cost and work that goes into building a photography business. It is hard. There’s so much you have to learn, so much you need to know, so many choices you have to make. You can’t just jump in and expect to succeed right off the bat, no matter how fantastic your photographs are.

You need guidance. And money. There’s the need for equipment – which gets expensive: cameras, lenses, lights, backdrops, back drop stands…. Then there’s the other equipment like a website, photoshop, brushes, actions…. The list just goes on and on. These products are all costly and take training to really understand and utilize.

That’s why I am so excited to tell all of you budding photographers about the SOAR! Scholarship from Me Ra Koh.

Nationally renowned photographer, Me Ra Koh, created this scholarship to empower and enlighten women, and the SOAR! scholarship allows three women to have their photography dreams come true by helping them build their own photography business. And I mean really build their businesses. These lucky women will receive SONY, Adobe and ShootQ photography equipment for their new business, and they will also receive valuable advice from industry leaders. (What I wouldn’t give for that!)

Each SOAR! Scholarship applicant must complete a brief online application, which requires personal & family information, a summary of what makes photography your passion and your time and travel commitments. Applicants must also submit a two-minute video explaining why they are worthy of receiving the SOAR Scholarship. The entire application process proves fast and easy, and all information can be found within the SOAR! Scholarship website:

I just found out about the contest, and the deadline is today, December 21st. So, hurry and get your entries in. This is such an amazing opportunity that you won’t want to miss out on. So, fill out your application, upload your video, and enter for your chance to win an amazing scholarship from Me Ra Koh.

Disclaimer: I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of the SOAR! Scholarship and Me Ra Koh Photography. In addition, I received an Amazon gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Never Fear, SafeEggs are Here!

The holidays are here. And if your house is anything like my house, that means you’re about to start making batches and batches of cookies. And what’s the best part about making cookies? Why it’s the dough, of course. I simply can’t resist the taste of raw cookie dough. BUT, it’s not the healthiest snacking choice. Whenever raw eggs are consumed, there’s always a good chance of getting sick from salmonella. All those Christmases that I spent pregnant or breastfeeding, forcing myself to refrain from the cookie dough was tough!

Now, pregnant women can rejoice!! Thanks to SafeEggs, you can safely consume all the cookie dough you want. And Moms, you don’t have to worry if your kids end up eating more of the cookie dough than you end up with on the cookie sheet. Safest Choice Eggs are a great alternative to regular eggs. They’re pasteurized, (kind of like milk), to ensure that they are safer than your average egg. These “Safe Eggs” have all of the same nutritional value, look the same, and definitely taste the same – but, there’s one big difference. These eggs are much safer to eat!

Have picky eaters? Well, have no fear. You can still please any guest with your dishes—Safe Eggs are all-natural, kosher and vegetarian. Have your eggs over easy or sunny-side up, raw in sauces and Caesar salads, lightly cooked in custards and desserts. It doesn’t matter! By choosing Davidson’s Safest Choice Eggs, you’ve made the Safest Choice!

This holiday season, stock up on Davidson’s Safest Choice Eggs and enjoy that cookie dough and eggnog. You’ll thank me later. 🙂

Not sure where to find SafeEggs? Click here for locations.

Also, become a fan of SafeEggs of Facebook, and you’ll get a $1 coupon on your purchase of 1 dozen Davidson’s Safest Choice Eggs. Be sure to follow SafeEggs on twitter for the latest scoop!

And if you’re really good in the kitchen, be sure to enter the SafeEggs Holiday Recipe Contest. The prizes are amazing! Here’s what their website says:

  • 1st Place: From food safety to home safety!  One lucky winner will receive a state-of-the art home security system with installation.  (Package value up to $1,000.)
  • 2nd Place: Bake safe, eat safe!  Three winners will receive a set of high-end, safety cookware, such as pads, racks, spoons, kitchen aid mixers with guards, etc. (Package value up to $500/ea. = $1,500 total.)
  • 3rd Place: Keep the kids safe even if you are busy in the kitchen!  5 lucky winners will receive a cell phone for the children with up to a year of free service. (Package value up to $200 ea. = $ 1,000 total.)

This year you can really enjoy your holiday cooking in a whole new way thanks to SafeEggs!

Follow Friday: Week 22

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love to make things. Whether it’s hair bows for baby girls, jewelry for my tween and her friends, or stuffed animals for my kids, I love to pull out my “stash” and get to work.

I am constantly scouring the internet, and mom bloggers who share my passion for creating handmade items. This week, I stumbled across a fabulous little blog, and I’m declaring Creative Little Daisy as this week’s follow worthy blog.

Not only are her photos beautiful, but her crafting abilities are awe-inspiring. (Check out this post on a wreath that she made. Gorgeous!) And she doesn’t just leave you hanging, either. In all of her posts, she either walks you through step by step (like she did with these beautiful handmade pillows), or she gives the link to find directions to make the items. That means you’re not sitting there for hours trying to figure out how in the world she made it. I *love* that! And if you’re really feeling crafty, you can check out her fabulous section of tutorials. I can’t wait to try out her tutorial for making a purse. I might end up with a new obsession on my hands.

Stop by Creative Little Daisy and get your creating caps on. I know I’ll be stopping by often to see what fun new ideas she comes up with, and I hope you’ll visit her, too!

To the author of Creative Little Daisy, thank you for taking the time to post and give all of us decorating – and crafting! – ideas and tutorials. They are certainly appreciated! Feel free to place this badge on your blog if you’d like:

Coleman $25 Gift Certificate Giveaway – CLOSED

I am not one who does well with camping. The thought of sleeping in a tent with bugs and critters all around me sends shivers down my spine. My Aunt & Uncle are the ultimate campers, though. They lead a Boy Scout troop, and I’m always admiring the great Coleman products they always take along on their trips. Coleman offers products that would help even someone like me fall in love with the great outdoors.

Not only does Coleman offer camping gear, they also offer emergency gear. Where we live, it doesn’t snow much. But, when a storm does hit, and the power goes out, it can be off for days and days. (I have heard some horror stories, and I totally get why there is no bread or milk left in the store at the mere mention of the word “snow.”) Lucky for us, Coleman offers a fabulous selection of gear to help keep my family safe and warm and help give us that little peace of mind that we’ll be ok.

And I just have to mention how much I adore this Pack-Away™ Portable Fireplace and Grill. (Hint, hint, Hubby!) 🙂

Right now, Coleman is hosting a 50-Day Gift Card Giveaway. They’re giving away a $25 Coleman Gift Certificate every day until January 14th. (For official rules, click here: Want more great news? They’re giving me a $25 Gift Certificate to give away to one of my readers, too!

Here’s how to enter both contests:

Twitter Contest

1. Follow Coleman on Twitter.
2. Tweet the answer to this question, “What would you buy this holiday season from and why?” Make sure you put @colemancampfire in your Tweet.

Entries are limited to one per person/Twitter account per day (note that the Twitter contest is open to US residents only). The official rules are at

Blog Giveaway

Readers also have an additional chance to win a $25 gift card here on 5 Vinez Monkeys! To enter to win here, the format is much the same:

1. Follow Coleman on Twitter.
2. Comment HERE, answering the question, “What would you buy this holiday season from and why?”

Leave just one comment below, include your twitter id and tell me what you would buy from and why.

There are no extra entries for this giveaway. You *must* follow Coleman on twitter, and you must leave a comment telling me what you would buy from Coleman and why. Be sure to leave your twitter id in the comment so that we can verify that you do follow Coleman. Any comments that do not follow the rules will be deleted.

The contest will run until January 3rd at 11:59pm EST. A winner will be selected via and announced on Monday, January 4th.
