Airwear Lenses: Lighter, Safer, Greener (Review)

Airwear Lenses are lighter, and more impact- and scratch- resistant than standard plastic lenses. In addition to increased durability, the lenses are made using environmentally conscious practices such as 100 percent recycled water, 100 percent recyclable packaging, and the company re-purposes unused materials in other industries. With these new, green practices Airwear conserves millions of gallons of water and eliminates 570,000 pounds of plastic waste every year!

About Airwear Lenses (as taken from the Airwear website):

Now you can support the environment and establish an every day green routine with your eyewear.

A pioneer in optical lenses, Essilor now employs green manufacturing processes in our Airwear® lenses. Airwear® lenses are the first Essilor lens material to go green, significantly reducing its environmental footprint by implementing responsible manufacturing, including:

  • Packaging: Essilor uses 100 percent recyclable cardboard made from 100 percent recyclable wooden fibers for Airwear® lenses, helping to eliminate 570,000 pounds of plastic waste every year.

  • Water Consumption: Essilor uses 100 percent recycled water for Airwear® lenses, cutting consumption in half and conserving millions of gallons of water.

  • Recycling Excess Material: Airwear® re-purposes unused materials for other industries, such as automobiles and writing instruments.

  • Donating Eyewear: Essilor supports Lions Club International’s Recycle for Sight program, which accepts old, usable glasses and donates them to those in need.

But going green doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort, performance, protection and style. Airwear® lenses are 43 percent lighter and 10 times more impact-resistant than standard plastic lenses. They also provide 100 percent UV protection.

Airwear® lenses are available for single vision and progressive prescriptions, and are compatible with the world’s most trusted vision brands, such as Varilux®, Crizal®, Xperio®, DEFINITY® and Transitions®.

My Review of Airwear Lenses

Thanks to Mom Central, I had the opportunity to try out a pair of Airwear Eyeglass Lenses. I quickly made an appointment with my eye doctor, picked out a smashing new frame, and sent my prescription and the frames off to Airwear.

It took about 3 weeks to get the glasses back, but I have to say that they were definitely worth the wait! I can’t believe how light the lenses are. My right eye is horrible, and every set of lenses I’ve had before was always really thick. Not these! They’re just as thin as my left eye’s lens, and they don’t stick out from the back of the frames. I love it! And don’t they look great? I’ve always been self-conscious about how I look in glasses – (maybe it’s those awful pink glasses I was forced to wear for so many years!) – but I love the look of these frames, and I love how light the lenses are. I’m going to be wearing glasses a lot more often now.
Another great feature of the Airwear Lenses is how scratch resistant they are. As a mom of 5 very rowdy kids, I need a pair of lenses that can really take it. So far, these are holding up great.

I also love that they provide 100% of UV protection. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 12 to 15 million people become blind from cataracts annually, and up to 20% of those may be caused or enhanced by sun exposure. Standard plastic lenses don’t give you any kind of protection, but Airwear lenses provide 100% protection from harmul UVA and UVB rays. This is really good news for me, because I found out at my last eye doctor visit that I’ve been harming my eyes by not wearing sunglasses and by wearing my disposable contacts longer than I should. If I want to fix the problems that I’ve created, I’ve got to make some serious changes. Thanks to Airwear, I’ve taken a big step in the right direction. And, since I love my glasses so much, you can be that people will be seeing me in them a lot more often.

Overall, I am quite satisfied with the Airwear lenses I received. Thank you to Mom Central and Airwear for allowing me the opportunity to try out these lenses.
