Before I get to the full review, here are some things you need to know about the book:
What happens when the pleasures of a tidy, carefully decorated home are traded for the excitement of high chairs and noisy toys? When quiet evenings and carefully planned schedules are traded for busy days and crazy nights? What happens when the desire to experience joy is replaced with the desire that another would experience joy? Karona Drummond weaves images of life before kids with life after kids. Children will delight in this love song written to them about the joyful change they bring about and how the loving sacrifices of their parents transform a simple life into an abundant life. This book is a truly a touching glimpse and a warm reminder of the parent heart of God.
Along Came You is the literary debut of Karona Drummond. In the book, Drummond writes about a mother and her daughter, two colorful characters that will not be easily forgotten. As a mother of 2 elementary-school aged children, she knows well the changes parents make to accommodate the additions of little ones in their lives. In Along Came You, she explores the loving sacrifices parents make for their children, transforming a simple life into one of abundance. Combining perspectives on life before and after kids, Along Came You teaches children about the simple pleasures they bring their parents.
The book is illustrated by Estelle Corke. At the age of 8, her teacher suggested that she begin drawing more and writing less, leading to the discover of her life’s passion. By the time she was 12, she won the highly sought after $1 prize at her local art fair. Corke considers her career as a children’s ilustrator the privilege of a lifetime, and she continues to eagerly pursue projects.
Monkey Mama’s Review of Along Came You
As I said above, this really is my new favorite book. First of all, it’s pink. And on the cover, there are sparkles. Pink are sparkles are the best combination. Hands down. I knew right off the bat that I was going to love this book.
And I was right. Aside from bing pink and sparkly on the outside, inside the book just gets better! It is beautifully illustrated. It captures Lucy’s attention, and we’ll talk about what’s in each picture. Zander even caught that on the first page, there’s a picture hanging on the cupboards. It appears that the little girl’s name may be Lucy, because you can clearly see the “ucy” written on the page. (Zander doesn’t miss a beat.)
My favorite page is the one that says, “Before you, my world was quiet. After you, there is joyful noise.” With 5 kids, that paragraph couldn’t be more true.
I loved how easy the book flows when reading it. It’s not too long, so it holds the kids’ attention the entire time. All of the kids really enjoy the book. The illustrations are bright, bold, and tons of fun. The book shows kids that even though Mommy’s life may not be what it was before she has kids, they make her life even better.
What a great book. A definite must-have for every home with children.
