Daily Bible Reading: Psalm 139
I know the Bible reading is quite a bit today, but there’s just so much I love about this chapter that I just have to read the whole thing. What an awesome God we serve! And, I know that it’s weigh in day. We’ll get to that in a little bit.
This chapter speaks of how much God loves us. How He cares SO deeply, even though He sees every one of our flaws.
Verses one through four tell us just how well He knows us. He knows everything we do, everywhere we go, when we sleep, and even the words that never make it off our tongue. It’s easy to feel like He is a million miles away. Sometimes, we get so down in the dumps we feel like even God has left us. These verses reassure us that even though we can’t feel His presence, He is still there. He knows every part of you, and He loves you more than words could ever speak.
Now look at verses seven through twelve. It doesn’t matter where we go or what we’re doing, He is still there. His Hand gently guides us along, we just have to take hold. Verses eleven and twelve give me so much comfort: “If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” Do you ever get to a place in your life where you feel like you are consumed by darkness? I have. You feel like there’s no way out. You’re alone, and you’re afraid. BUT, we can hold tight to the fact that even when we’re in that darkness, we know the Light. He IS Light, and He can turn the night back into day. We just have to run to Him.
Before I keep going in the chapter, I want to interject with something here: I know many of you are dealing with some REALLY tough things right now. Some have emailed me, and some, the Lord just put on my heart. I know the way seems so dark right now, but you can have hope. You can have peace. You can love again, trust again, pick up and move on. BUT, you have to completely put your trust in Christ first. You won’t make it on your own strength. Here’s the good news, though: YOU DON’T HAVE TO. Christ will give you the strength to face your valley head on and get you back on the mountain top. Trust Him. Love Him. He’ll make it right.
Now, let’s look at verses thirteen through eighteen. God knew you before you were even born. When He was hanging on the cross, He whispered YOUR name. I can’t keep the tears from flowing when I think about how much He loves me, especially when I feel so unworthy. Verse fourteen says that “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” You are beautiful because you were hand made by God himself. Even when you look in the mirror or come across a picture that makes you want to cry, you are STILL beautiful. God looks past that outward shell and sees your heart, and He loves you so much. He sees only the beauty that surrounds you. He can’t see the bad (verse 16). Verses seventeen and eighteen tell us that He thinks highly of us, and He thinks about us all the time. What the scale says right now doesn’t matter. Yes, we need to be healthy, and yes, we need to work at fighting temptation, but if that number isn’t what you want it to be yet, it’s OK. Really! God still adores you. You are still beautiful.
Lastly, I want to look at verses 23 and 23: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” If we want to get the outside right and get our cravings under control, we must first become consumed with Christ. We must want Him to search us. We have to want to get to know Him and allow Him to know us. If there’s something we are doing wrong, we must beg Him to let it be made known so we can fix it. (And I have to say, it’s always better when we come to Him and ask Him to show us what we’re doing wrong. Otherwise, He may just make it known publicly and it will be that much harder to recover from.)
Whatever you are facing right now, whether you are on the mountain top or crawling through the valley, remember that God loves you more than anything and He is standing right beside you. Lean on Him no matter what life throws your way.
1. Does it help you to know that you aren’t alone in your daily endeavors? Is there a way you can see Christ even when everything seems so dark?
2. Instead of a second question, I want you to do one thing for me today: Remind someone that they are beautiful. It can be someone from church, a facebook friend, a relative, a neighbor – the sky is the limit. You don’t have to tell us who you selected, but I want you to write down their reaction and how it made you feel.
3. What did the scale say? How are you feeling today?
Exercise at least 30 minutes and drink 8 glasses of water.
