Research Bankruptcy Attorneys Before Filing

A little over a month ago, my husband and I were at our wits’ end. We had hit a really rough patch, and it seemed like filing bankruptcy was our only way out. I got online and started looking up bankruptcy attorneys in our area.

Unfortunately, we don’t live in an area where any kind of lawyer is easy to find. Everywhere I looked, I could only find someone about 3 hours away from us. That’s a long drive, even if it was for a free consultation.

My husband found out about a local bankruptcy attorney in the area, so we made an appointment to meet with her.

The appointment was not at all what I expected. We pulled up to her building and found her brand new Corvette parked in the first space. We walk in, give the receptionist our name, and sit and wait for almost half an hour. When the lawyer finally comes out to meet us, she’s in her capri pants, t-shirt, and flip flops. Totally unprofessional, and my opinion of her immediately dropped. I knew that it wasn’t going to be a good visit.

I was right. The bankruptcy attorney wanted more money up front than what we owed. And she wouldn’t take monthly payments. We had to come up with that money right then and there. She refused to work with us, and that’s when we decided that we weren’t going to file bankruptcy. We just didn’t owe enough to justify it.

I do wish that we had taken more time to research bankruptcy attorneys, though. I’m certain that if we had taken our time, we would have found the right attorney to handle our case. I would have felt better with a more professional-looking attorney that was willing to work with us. Bankruptcy didn’t happen for us, but if you are wondering if it’s right for you, I definitely recommend researching bankruptcy attorneys ahead of time. Take your time and do what’s right for you.
