Researching Vacuum Cleaners

With 6 kids, I can’t even begin to tell you how many vacuum cleaners I have been through. I have yet to find a good vacuum cleaner that cleans well and can handle everything my large family will put it through.

Our current vacuum cleaner is about on it’s last leg. You have to run it over an area 10 times before it will pick something up, and it’s starting to stink. I’m tired of dealing with it, and I’m ready to start researching vacuum cleaners.

I’d love to get YOUR input and hear which vacuum cleaner is going to be the best fit for my family. If you have a vacuum cleaner and it’s not on my list, I’d love to hear about it as well!

Here are the ones I’m looking at:

  • Dyson’s DC24 Multi floor – This one would be great for the house we live in now. It’s got the ability to work on any kind of floor, and with an equal amount of hardwood floors and carpet floors, I think it would be a nice fit.

  • Electrolux Nimble® EL8602A – Another one made for different floor types. I love how it’s a one-touch switch from hard floors to carpet. I love the 3-in-1 tool. Would be great for all my steps. And, I really think Electrolux is on the cutting edge of “what moms want.”
    electrolux vacuum
  • Oreck ® Forever Series™ Gold – I love the warranty on this one. And I like the idea of never needing to buy another vacuum again, since I’m currently buying a new one every year. (At least – if I buy a cheap one, I’m buying a new one every 3 – 6 months.) Can it really keep up with 6 kids, though?

  • Hoover Platinum Collection™ Cyclonic Bagless Upright – Price is decent, and there’s a 6 year limited warranty. Not sure about a Hoover, though. I’ve never owned one before.

So, what do you think? Would one of those be a good fit for my big, crazy family? Is there one that I’m missing?

I’d love a germ-killing vacuum, but all I could find was the Oreck Halo, but those aren’t even for sale on the Oreck website anymore. Something that’s good for Allergies/Asthma is a MUST, since Ashley, Jace, and I all suffer from both allergies and asthma.

Help this desperate mom out. If you love your vacuum, tell me all about it – or if you think one of these is a good pick.

As a mum of 4 kids (5 if you include my husband), 2 border collies, 2 cats, 2 birds and a partridge in a pear tree .. ok so maybe not the partridge .. I’ve gone through my fair share of vacuum cleaners.

Oreck I found was my favorite so far as someone with fibromyalgia and CFS they are lightweight and easier to use, but they do require you to get them serviced .. at least the basic model I had did and the belts do wear out but the warranty is good and I have taken it for service for free with the warranty. The other nice thing is that if you buy one from the right place, you can usually get a free canister vac and I love mine, it’s been used so much we wore down the tip!

The dyson DC25 upright was my next test subject, purchased last March .. on carpets it’s great for picking up the smallest bits of dust/grime but try picking up anything bigger and it fails miserably. The thing is also a monster .. weighs so much I’d get pains in my neck from hauling and pushing it around .. then the hose that’s “extendable” to do the stairs sucks .. and I don’t mean in a good way .. it broke within a few months and I had to buy a new fixture to repair it at around $40 ..

If you’re looking for hard floors rather than carpets, right now I’m trying out the Electrolux UltraSilencer, we just moved to a house with no carpeting and with all the dog/cat hair I need something lightweight and fast that I can use daily .. it’s not perfect but after trying out multiple ideas including 2 different shop vacs with attachments it’s the best I’ve found and they do make one that’s more for multi-purpose but I just can’t say I know how good that would work ..

    Hope that helps 🙂

I have a handheld Dyson and I love love LOVE it! I’m recommending the Dyson brand for its dependability and quality. I would love to have an upright Dyson!

Hey! I used to sell Kirbys and your story is far too common, you know the buying vac after vac one. You really need to look at what materials the vac is made with, plastic just isn’t going to last as long as you need it to. Kirbys last forever, you know this is true as they are still around decades later. I personally would never use anything other than a Kirby and the new ones are really awesome with a transmission that makes it glide without any effort. If you buy one new it will come with a lifetime warranty which includes reconditioning or you can get one off of craigslist or ebay for a better deal. Forget what you think about Kirbys and try one out, it will do everything you want it to do and much much more! Ya, it has a tool for that!

I have the orange Dyson with the ball like in the picture. I’ve also had a bunch of others over the years including Electrolux (FIL worked for them) and Rainbow as well as the Hoovers and various other couple hundred dollar ones from Walmart of Sears. This Dyson is the BEST one for me. We have two dogs and two cats and three granddaughters and LOTS of grown people to clean up after. I love the swivel of the ball because you can get up under furniture, under my kitchen cupboards and lots of places without any extra trouble. It picks up beautifully, especially well on stuff you can’t even see (filling up the canister when you THOUGHT it was clean). I personally have a bit of problem removing the canister for dumping, but my 22 month old granddaughter can do it in a snap, so I just ask her to do it and hand it to me. I’ve had mine for a couple years without any problems at all. Suction is still just as good as when it came out of the box. I don’t think you’d be disappointed with the Dyson.

I like the Oreck but have friends who really enjoy the Dyson….nothing like having a GOOD vacuum! Good luck in your search and hope you post what you decided and how it works out for your family 🙂
