Shrek Forever After™ The Game from Activision (Review)

Want to team up in the Ultimate Adventure with Shrek? There’s a new video game available from Activision, and it’s got all of your favorite characters: Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and Puss in Boots.

I recently had the opportunity to test out Shrek Forever After™ The Game with my kids. Before I get to that review, here’s some information about the game:

Longing for the days when he felt like a real ogre, Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking deal-maker, Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek suddenly finds himself in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin is king, and Shrek and Fiona have never met. Now it’s up to Shrek (with the help of Fiona, Donkey, and Puss in Boots) to undo all he’s done in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world, and reclaiming his one True Love.

My Review of Shrek Forever After™ The Game
Mom Central recently sent us a fantastic Shrek prize pack that included a Shrek Forever After Mad Libs book, the Shrek Forever After Movie Storybook, and Shrek Forever After™ The Game for the wii.

My kids could barely contain their excitement when the box showed up on our doorstep. They all love Shrek, and we can’t wait to go see the new movie. This prize pack was a great way to tide them over until we can get to the theater (or with our luck, the video store). I’ll go through each product we recived one by one and tell you what my kids thought about it.

First, the Mad Libs book. Do you remember Mad Libs? It’s the crazy word game where you have stories that contain blank spaces where words are missing. If you’re playing with more than one player, the “reader” asks each “writer” to call out words – an adjective, an noun, or whatever that spaces calls for. Once all of the spaces are filled in, the “reader” reads back the hysterical story that they all came up with. You can also play alone. They’ll give you the spaces and word-types needed before you read the story, just fill those in and then plug them into your story. I used to love Mad Libs as a kid. I’d spend hours making up stories and just laughing. Ashley’s most difficult subject is Grammar, so this is a great way to get her to think while having fun. Even Zander and Jace get in on the fun, and we’ve come up with some really great stories that cause us to burst out laughing.

Next, we got the Shrek Forever After Movie Storybook. Zander absolutely loves this book. There have been several times when I’ve “caught” him lying on his bed just reading. (I love that!) I’ve even caught him reading the book to Lucy, Parker, and Jace. They’ll sit there, wide-eyed, listening so intently. The book really is great. It tells the story without completely giving everything away. The pictures in the book are taken from the movie, so when you read it, you feel like you become a part of the movie. It’s a hard-cover book, so it’s much more durable, and I’m certain we’ll be enjoying it for many years to come.

Now, let’s talk about Shrek Forever After™ The Game. This was my kids favorite part of the package. A new game for the wii! I played first, by myself, just to get an idea of how difficult it was going to be for the kids to play. After all, it is rated Everyone 10+. Since I only have one that’s over 10, I wanted to check it out and see how hard it would be for Zander and Jace to jump in. I was really surprised how easy it was to play. There are some tough parts – puzzles you have to solve, and points when you’re fighting off tons of bad guys – but it wasn’t anything my kids couldn’t handle together (or with my help).
So, we started over, this time with 4 players: me, Ashley, Zander, and Jace. We had a ball. Now, any time we play this game, we play it together, because it’s so much more fun to play with someone than it is to play alone. Each character has their own unique ability, and when you play together, it’s easier to work together and move farther and farther into the game. Just don’t ask Jace to be Fiona. (wink)

My kids loved morphing between the two worlds, fighting the bad guys, and solving puzzles and riddles to advance in the game – all with Shrek and their other favorite characters. I’m predicting that we’ll be spending lots of time with Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and Puss and Boots on our wii in the time to come.

Shrek Forever After™ The Game is available for the wii, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, and for your PC DVD Rom.
