Spokeo – No, No, No!

I’m not sure if you’ve heard about this website or not, but I think it’s horrible. Spokeo gives detailed information about you – credit score, address, house value, age, income level, etc. I did a search for my name, and I ended up finding 2 different addresses – both were previous addresses I’ve lived in. Then, I did a search for my maiden name, and guess what? Yep. It was there too. Most of the information was correct, but MAN. Is it scary.

Please head over to Spokeo and see if you are listed. To remove a listing, you’ll need the link to your profile. (Simply click on your name in the left column, and copy the link address in your web address bar. You can request to remove a listing here: http://www.spokeo.com/privacy Then, just follow the steps. You’ll need to insert your email address so that you can verify that you want it removed. I just used an old email address that I never check any more so that if they decide to spam me, I won’t get it anyway.

I also want you to know that they will limit how many listings you can remove per email address AND per day. I’m on there 3 times, and it removed 2 listings under 1 email address, and then it let me remove the third under a separate email address. My husband is on there 4 times, and when I went to remove him, it said “In order to prevent abuse, we must limit the frequency of privacy requests. Please try again tomorrow.” So much for this sentence on their privacy page: “Spokeo cares about data privacy.” Baloney. If you cared about my privacy, Spokeo, you’d ask me before you made it public to the whole world.

I’m all about staying safe, and I want my readers to be protected as well. I hope your information isn’t on the site, but if it is, I hope my instructions on removing it were easy to follow.

Stay safe out there!

Angie, we found out about this crazy site last year. I removed myself and hubby!

    Thanks for the reminder!

My married name didn’t come up, but my maiden name came up with three previous addresses. It came up that I make over 100 K a year, though. I wish!

I shared your post (rewritten) with my readers and linked back to you. It was too important to not share. Thanks for giving everyone the heads up.

They didn’t have all that info on me! From the info they offered on your ‘music preferences and hobbies’, my guess is they’re scraping the social networking sites. Another good reason to tighten up our privacy settings out there!

So happy to hear about the pregnancy going well. You are blessed!!

I found a previous address and it’s freaky that they let you see a satellite picture of your house, too. That site needs to DISAPPEAR! Too many kooks out there. It’s letting me remove mine.

Just searched my husband’s name and found our CURRENT address with the satellite picture. Ugh. They wouldn’t let me use the same email to remove it so I just used another one.

    Thanks for posting!

LMBO! My info is listed at my work address and half of it is dead wrong! So, I am going to leave it. 😉

Thanks for the info on how to remove my name. Mine didn’t have any recent addresses luckily.

FYI – You have to click the link they send you in your email to confirm the removal!
