Update on Gage

Yesterday, we had to take Gage to a pediatric urologist down toward Atlanta. We knew that Gage has a Hydrocele on each side. What we didn’t know was if these hydroceles were also hernias and if we would have to consider surgery.

Gage’s little sac “down there” will swell up and become the size of a baseball. It is absolutely horrible. One of my other boys had a hydrocele, but it was never anything like this. This is just outright scary. But, it’s not like that all the time. It does shrink back down to a normal size. It seems to be best at his first diaper change in the morning, and it swells up and goes back down all day long. It’s never appeared to cause him any pain, but it just looks awful.

We drove about 2 1/2 hours to get to the urologist’s office. It was an eventful trip, considering we got into a car accident on the way down. (Don’t worry, we’re fine. It was a minor fender-bender. It was just an omen for the day, I think.} When we finally got there, we waited in the room for a few minutes before the doctor came in. The doctor took a look at Gage and explained to us that in baby boys a Hydrocele and a Hernia are the same thing. Usually, they resolve on their own. If Gage’s haven’t resolved by the time he is 9 months old, then we’ll need to consider surgery at that point. He said that if they don’t repair themselves by the time the baby is 9 months old, they probably won’t.

He spent less than 5 minutes with us, and never even looked at the ultrasound disc they had asked me to bring. We spent 5+ hours in the car for a 5 minute appointment. So not cool. I am thrilled that Gage is ok for now and that I don’t have to worry about my 2 month old needing surgery. I am not thrilled that they couldn’t have just told me this over the phone instead.

Hopefully this will resolve quickly and he won’t have any more problems. That’s what I’m praying for anyway!

Thanks for all your prayers for him. We go back in December, but hopefully it will all be healed up and we won’t even have to make that drive again!
