It’s no secret that we love superheroes in our house. In fact, we love them so much, that each family member actually has their own superhero. One of those superheroes happens to be Spider-Man. We love Spider-Man! 🙂 Our son, Parker, was even named after Spider-Man, that’s how much we love him! (Peter Parker = Spider-Man. Our boys picked out his name, and we went with it!) So, when the opportunity arose to review the new Jay Franco & Sons Spider-Man collection, I jumped on it! I just knew Parker would be giddy when this box arrived in the mail.

I wasn’t wrong! 🙂 Parker couldn’t wait to get his hands on everything in the box, and the first thing he did was put the Marvel Spider-Man Zippy Sack on his bed. (Don’t worry! He had help!) Here’s why I love the Zippy Sack:

  • It’s super easy to put on the bed. We just put it right over his sheet, and it was ready to go! Less than 2 minutes from bag to bed. Love that!
  • Parker can make his own bed every morning. I hate fighting with my kids about making their beds. With the Zippy Sack, he gets out of bed, zips it closed, and his bed looks fantastic all day long. Bam!
  • It is super soft! I don’t have to worry about him getting to hot or cold or itchy during the night. The incredibly soft material keeps him comfortable all night long.

He also absolutely loves the Spider-Man Plush Snuggle Pillow Buddy. So much fun in one crazy little character. He’s perfect to snuggle with every night, he uses him as a pillow to watch movies in the living room, and he loves playing with him. Parker is a rough and tumble kind of kid, and the pillow buddy has held up to countless pillow fights already. 😉

The last item we received is the Spider-Man Hooded Bath/Beach Poncho Towel. While Parker loves this, the baby won’t let him use it. It’s hysterical. For some reason, Sawyer has claimed this towel as his own, and he freaks out if Parker uses it. Parker totally understands, though, and he’s been good to share the towel with Sawyer without complaint. This towel is soft, dries quickly, and makes anyone who is wearing it feel like a superhero.

Why I Can’t Go See Spiderman (And I Really, Really Want To)

As the mom of 4 boys, and most likely a 5th little boy on the way, it should come as no surprise that I love Superheroes. The craze started when my boys were 1 and 2. For Halloween that year, we dressed as a Superhero family. Hubby bought an authentic Batman costume from a costume rental place, Ashley was Supergirl, Zander was Superman, Jace was Batman, and I made my own SuperMom costume – complete with tiara and magic wand. 🙂 Here… I have a picture I can share:

Halloween 2005
So funny, right? It’s obvious the obsession runs deep.

Spiderman is my absolute favorite of the superheroes. Our 3rd son Parker got his name from Peter Parker. Yep, I’m a little off kilter, I know, but I really like Superheroes. 🙂

And that’s why I’m so bummed that I can’t go see Spiderman right now.

Why can’t I?

Because of another movie that is playing in the theaters right now called Magic Mike.

What does Magic Mike have to do with Spiderman?

Let’s say my best friend decided to take me to see Spiderman for my birthday. No big deal, right?

Well, what would you think if you saw two women standing in line for popcorn and Twizzlers? What movie would you guess those two women would be there to see? I’m thinking that Spiderman would be the last movie that would cross your mind.

Even if you knew me and you knew how I felt about the movie Magic Mike, you might still question what I was doing at the theater. Then, you might start to doubt that my convictions are a strong as I say they are.

The same would be true if I went to see Spiderman with my husband. What if I got up during the movie and used the restroom? Someone might see me walking into the restroom, not knowing that I was there with my husband, and just assume that I was seeing a movie that I shouldn’t see. Again – there goes everything I’ve said right out the window.

The Bible clearly says, “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” (I Thess. 5:22)

With Magic Mike playing in the theater, I cannot abstain from any appearance of evil if I walk into the theater. It would take one person I know seeing me there and jumping to the conclusion that I was there to see something I shouldn’t.

In 30 seconds, my entire testimony could be ruined, and I wouldn’t even know it. I cannot risk it. I will not go see Spiderman until Magic Mike has left the theater.

So, why am I so against Magic Mike?

For oh so many reasons.

  • It is pornography. Ps 101:3 says, “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.” There really needs to be no more explanation. I think the Bible clearly says it all. But, I will add this: What if the media put out a movie about female strippers, and all the husbands wanted to go see it? We women would be up in flames! Why on earth is it ok for US to go see a movie about male strippers? 2 words: IT’S NOT.
  • It is of the world. 1 John 2:15 – 17 says, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”  And what else does the Bible say about being in this world? Romans 12:2 says, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Just because the world says something is ok does not make it ok. We are to stand out. To be different. To go against the flow.
  • It is adultery. Matthew 5:28 says, “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.” Now, I understand that verse is written to a man, but ladies, that does not exclude us. If we enter a theater to lust after a man, we are committing adultery.
  • It is sin. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” The things that Magic Mike would cause us to think about are in no way described in that verse. We must take care to put things into our minds that are healthy and pleasing to the Lord. Why? Because of 1 Peter 5:8 – “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” Satan wants to devour you. He wants to destroy your marriage, your relationship with Christ, and your entire life. Do not allow him to have that power!

I know this post will not gain me any popularity points. And I may lose some friends and readers because of this. But, that’s all right. A true friend would not see this post as judgement, but instead as instruction. (Need verses on instruction? The book of Proverbs is full of them!) And if you want to read another post about the dangers and pitfalls of Magic Mike and 50 Shades of Grey, I highly recommend this post by Melissa Jenna.

By putting up this post, I am not declaring that I am perfect. I will be the first to tell you that I fail my Jesus daily and that I am in a constant state of repentance. And God is faithful to forgive us – no matter what we have done. My life before Christ was anything but “good.” But now that I have found Him, and I know Him as my Savior, I want to do what pleases Him. And I want to encourage other women to please Him as well.

If you have failed Him, it’s ok. He still loves you. Repent, turn from your sin, and let Him have control of your life.

Romans 5:20b says, “But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:”

We will all make mistakes, but grace abounds, and God loves His children.

Edited to add: As I was preparing this post, my husband called me on his way to work to tell me that a local little theater is no longer showing Magic Mike and is showing Spiderman. Looks like a date night may just well be in our future. 🙂
