Why Milk?

It’s summertime, and you know what that means – we’ve got to find cold, refreshing drinks to give to our kids after playing outside. I honestly had no idea that milk was something good to give kids after playing hard.

Milk helps ensure that kids absorb their vitamin D during the hot summer months, AND it also delivers eight other essential nutrients. So just because it’s hot outside and our kids need to cool off, it doesn’t mean we have to give them sugary sports drinks, lemonades, or soda (that are all spiked with hidden calories anyway!). We can give them milk – and ensure that they’re getting the very best.

Do you have a hard time getting your kids to drink their milk? I’ve been really lucky in this area. My kids are big fans of milk, and it doesn’t even have to be chocolate to get them to drink it! 9 times out of 10, if Lucy has a cup in her hand, it’s full of milk. She loves it. All of my kids have been like this. In fact, we go through between 3 – 4 gallons of milk a week in our house. We love it! My favorite is the Peanut Butter Split Smoothie. Talk about heaven. MMMMmmmmm. Somehow, we always seem to end up with overripe bananas. Since I found this recipe, now I know what to do with them! 🙂 They have recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and smoothies, so you’re certain to find something that your kids will like. Really! No more fighting with them to drink their milk. My kids like that we’ve found other ways to enjoy milk, but their very favorite is still an ice cold glass filled to the top with fresh milk. Yum!

    I've been accused of being a draconian mother because I have two beverages of choice in the house: milk and water. (I suppose I should clarify and say I have two beverage choices for the kids–add coffee and an occasional glass of wine for the grownups.) Juice isn't healthy…it's full of sugar (even 100% juice–it's just natural sugar)and doesn't add as much nutritional value as a whole orange or apple. You do have to be careful about your source of milk; it's better to avoid the hormone-fed cow source, and a cow that has been fed a better diet (i.e. not the leftover, stale hard sugar candy and other things some farmers have started using to cut costs) will produce a more nutritious product. But I'm with you…milk is definitely a better choice over juices and sodas and other sugar drinks any time of year.
