Daily Bible Reading: Matthew 4:1-4
This passage deals with Jesus being tempted. Isn’t it good to know that Jesus Himself faced situations so He could be an example for us? He is the perfect example, and I am so thankful we can look to Him when we don’t know what to do.
In this passage, Jesus had fasted 40 days and 40 nights. Just imagine for a minute how you would feel after not eating **anything** for 40 days and 40 nights. Good grief, I can’t even skip one meal without noticing there’s nothing on my belly. I’m pretty sure that after 40 days, I would be angry and want to eat everything in sight! And if I had the power of God?! The ability to send manna from Heaven, turn stones into bread, cast water out of rocks – well, let’s just say, I probably wouldn’t have lasted those 40 days without sneaking something here or there.
But, that’s just one more reason why I’m not God.
Look at the way Jesus handles the temptation from Satan. Satan knows that Jesus has just fasted for 40 days, so he is well aware of how hungry Jesus must be, especially in a human body. So, he says, “If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.”
We all know Jesus could have done it. It would have been SO easy for Him. But, if He did that, what would He be teaching us? “When you’re hungry, you can do whatever you want.”
I am so, so thankful that’s not what He did! Instead, He says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Did you catch that? He used Scripture to back up His choice not to give in!
This is the main reason why I encourage you to memorize Scripture so much. When Satan tempted Jesus, Jesus used Scripture to shoot him down. If we fill our minds with the word of God, when temptation comes, we can give Biblical reasons why we should flee from that temptation.
Jesus didn’t give in – and we don’t have to, either! It’s not always easy, but I can’t imagine it was easy for Him to turn down bread after fasting for 40 days. So, who am I to give in when that donut is calling my name?
1. Are you still feeling tempted as often, or has your change in habits helped to block temptation?
2. If you are still feeling tempted, how do you overcome the temptation?
3. Have you found yourself recalling verses to yourself when temptations arise?
Exercise at least 30 minutes and drink 8 glasses of water.
