Daily Bible Reading: Matthew 6: 5 – 8 (Key verse: verse 6)
Today will be a little different than other days, but when God puts something on your heart, it’s best just to listen.
Yesterday was our 13th wedding anniversary. Because it was also Labor Day, it meant hubby would have to work all day long. We knew our only day to anything together was going to be Sunday afternoon/evening. After church that morning, we made sure the kids were fed, and then we headed over the mountain to Gainesville. (For those of you who may not know, there is absolutely nothing in our little area. If you want good restaurants, shopping, etc, you have to drive either over the mountain or several hours down the 4 lane. BIG adjustment from my years in the Chicagoland area.)
Anyway, our first stop was Olive Garden for lunch. We never ever get to eat anywhere nice, so Hubby wanted to make it special. (And, he knows I have an incurable love for pasta, bread, and Italian salad dressing.) 😉 I had bread, salad, and half of the Tour of Italy. (I honestly wanted everything on the menu. I figured it was the best way to sample a little bit of several items instead of eating ALL of one item.) Yes, I ate too much, but at least I didn’t clean my plate, right? And I did drink water…
After that, we walked around the strip mall. We didn’t buy much, but we held hands and talked the entire time. We wanted something else to do, so we decided we would go see the movie War Room. Several of our friends had seen it and said how excellent it was. I just had no idea it would be life changing.
We paid for our tickets, soda, and popcorn, (yes, I cheated. Again. SIGH.), and headed to our seats. We were the first ones in the theater, and I prayed that it would stay empty. Well, God didn’t listen, and he put family akin to the Duggar family behind us. (Not the Duggars, just a LOT of them.) Immediately, my heart fell into the wrong attitude. I was already making the wrong food (and drink) choices. I don’t even remember the last time I actually had a soda. Can’t say that anymore. Because of those wrong choices, my heart wasn’t where it needed to be.
And then the movie started. Not two minutes into it, I was under conviction and bawling like a baby. I cried throughout the entire movie. My husband cried through much of it as well. It was truly one of the most life changing movies I have ever seen. It’s funny, it’s just a movie, but the message in the movie was exactly what my husband and I both needed.
After the movie, we called Ash to let her know we were on our way home and then started back. Hubby stopped at Dairy Queen because he wanted a milkshake, and I gave in and ordered a small Blizzard. (Yeesh. How many BAD choices can one person make in a day? Seriously?! I totally blew it.)
I ate about half of the Blizzard and then threw the rest away. At least I still have the power to keep from eating ALL of my bad choices, the problem is, it’s obvious I’m still lacking in the “Just say NO” department.
As we started over the mountain, I plugged my phone into the audio jack and told Hubby I had a song I wanted him to hear. It’s the song that God is using most to talk to me right now. It’s by Casting Crowns, and it’s called “The Well.” As we’re listening, we both start crying. My playlist continues through, and it was as if God himself started shuffling those songs one by one. By the time we got over the mountain, we were both crying like babies.
We have decided that the one thing our home is lacking is a prayer closet. A “war room,” if you will. So, yesterday, after my walk, I tore everything out of our closet, and it has now become our prayer closet. It can be used by anyone in the house who needs it, but it will also be used together – by my husband and myself, or us and the kids, it doesn’t matter, it’s just going to get used.
Ladies, if you haven’t seen this movie, PLEASE go see it. Listen to the message of this movie. Allow the Holy Spirit to talk to you while you are in the theater. I know that sounds crazy. It’s a movie, for crying out loud. But, it is a powerful one with a message every single Christian on Earth needs to hear.
I want, desperately, to be the woman in that movie. The one whose prayer life gives her a one-on-one connection to the throne of God. It is now my goal to increase my prayer life even more so that I can get that much closer to the Throne, and then teach other women how to do the same.
I made a lot of bad choices on Sunday, but God brought it all full circle. He continues to show me that even when I mess up, as I do quite often, He still loves me. He picks me up, wipes off my sin, and He puts me on my feet again. He shows me grace when I don’t even deserve it. Our God is good.
1. Has there ever been a book or a movie that has spoken to you and caused you to make life changing decisions because of it?
2. What part of your spiritual life is God wanting you to improve? Do you think it’s one specific area, or lots of little things that need the focus?
3. Are you willing to do whatever it takes to improve that area (those areas) of your life?
Exercise at least 30 minutes and drink 8 glasses of water.
